Canton is warning all residents that those "flushable" wipes, aren't so flushable after all.
Canton's Public Works Division would like to advise all residents that popular bathroom wipes -- pre-moistened towelettes that are often advertised as flushable – are contributing to clogs and backups in Canton's sanitary sewer system.
Although wipes are advertised as "flushable," the wipes don't break down fast enough and end up getting stuck in private sewer leads and the public sewer system. This leads to costly repairs when you factor in the amount of time and money it costs to dispatch crews to unclog pipes and pumps and to replace and repair equipment.
In order to combat this problem Canton is asking residents to follow our "No Wipes in the Pipes" campaign. Signage will be placed at township facilities reminding residents not to flush disposable wipes.
For more information on the damage these wipes cause, please view the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) wipes brochure (PDF).
